Lip augmentation using fillers is more popular than ever, so it’s important for patients to separate fact from fiction before scheduling their lip injections. When performed by a skilled injector, lip injections can give you a plumper, sensuous mouth with just the right amount of poutiness. Many people, however, are leery of going under the needle because they’ve heard horror stories about lip augmentation. So, in this blog post, I’ll address a few of the common lip filler myths.

MYTH 1: Anyone can inject fillers.

Well, it is true that just about anyone can inject fillers. But it’s a myth that someone without the training and experience of a credentialed professional, along with an eye for aesthetics, can provide beautiful results. I’ve made the use of injectable fillers such as Restylane® Silk — which is designed specifically for lip enhancement — a major part of my practice.

Getting the results you want from lip augmentation with fillers depends primarily on the expertise of the injector. If you’re new to treatment, our Beginner’s Guide to Lip Injections walks you through what to expect from the process step by step.

MYTH 2: If you end up not liking the results, you are stuck with them.

Some fillers can take time to break down and be absorbed by the body, but the most popular fillers are made using hyaluronic acid (HA). HA lip fillers are dissolvable by injecting hyaluronidase if you’re not satisfied with the way the procedure turned out. That’s very helpful if you get lip enhancement from an unqualified injector (see Myth 1).

MYTH 3: You are going to look like you have duck lips.

If there’s a downside to the lip enhancement trend, it’s that some patients end up with the dreaded “duck lip” appearance. And that’s one of the reasons many people who could truly benefit from lip fillers shy away from getting the treatment performed. When done correctly, however, lip injections create a subtle improvement in the volume and shape of the lips. Again, this speaks to the importance of choosing an experienced injector. I’m noticing a theme.

MYTH 4: Lip injection results don’t last long.

Patients sometimes confuse fillers with BOTOX® Cosmetic, which lasts up to 4 months at most. And the fillers used for lip injections can actually last longer than other fillers. Fillers such as Restylane Silk, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA, and RHA® 2 and RHA® 3 can last up to a year. With touch-up injections every 9 or 10 months, you can keep the sensuous appearance of your lips almost indefinitely.

As you can see, the first step in getting the desired results from lip injections is to do your homework so you feel confident in the person doing the injections. Like many cosmetic procedures, the provider is the most important factor when it comes to patient satisfaction.
