Everything You Need to Know About Microneedling

Microneedling at our Atlanta practice is an effective option for skin rejuvenation without significant pain or downtime. We use the Rejuvapen™ which offers safety and reliability, especially when compared with other microneedling devices. Before scheduling your treatment, it’s important to do some research so you fully understand the process.

Microneedling can treat a number of concerns. It can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin texture. Because the needle depth is adjustable, we can perform microneedling treatments not only on the face but also on the neck and chest. A microneedling treatment can benefit the skin as follows:

  • Improves elasticity
  • Increases firmness
  • Softens fine lines and wrinkles
  • Repairs acne scars
  • Minimizes pore size
  • Reduces excess pigmentation

It doesn’t hurt as much as you might think. We provide a topical anesthetic before the treatment, and patients report the discomfort level is mild. Before your procedure begins, one of our staff will apply the anesthetic and then begin treatment once it’s safe to proceed. The Rejuvapen microneedling treatment itself only takes about 30 to 45 minutes. It typically causes mild swelling and redness in the first couple of days. The feeling is similar to a mild sunburn, and any pain can be managed using over-the-counter pain relief medication. Most of these side effects will resolve after the initial recovery period.

The Rejuvapen uses 9 tiny needles at different depths to create fine pinpricks in the top layer of the skin. This stimulates the skin’s natural healing response, regenerating damaged cells and increasing the production of collagen and elastin.

Choosing the right doctor is important. Though microneedling is only a minimally invasive procedure, it is still necessary to find an experienced physician. Make sure he or she is board-certified. This means that your doctor has completed special training, exams, and an accredited plastic surgery or dermatology residency program.  Your doctor should also be a member of professional associations like the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Lastly, your doctor should have good references. Although it is not always possible to speak with other patients due to the private nature of these treatments, the best reference is a former patient or friend who has had a procedure performed by the doctor you’re considering.

Multiple treatments are needed to achieve optimal results. While some patients attain the improvements they want after a single treatment, most people require a series of 3 to 4 treatments spaced a few weeks apart to reach their desired results. Some patients choose to schedule additional treatments as they see their skin tone and texture improve.

Results emerge gradually. From 3 to 6 months after treatment, you will begin noticing improvements. Since microneedling helps the body naturally produce collagen and elastin, the results will be long-lasting.
